Student-Created Podcasts: Editing for Essential Information
History students always use editing skills to keep pertinent information as part of their written work, but Mr. Knox’s Grade 11 students, in collaboration with Lincoln School’s Director of Technology, Mr. Harwell made use of these same skills in creating original podcasts. Each student explored a significant individual in the past 50 years of Indian history through BBC interviews with experts and in some cases, historical figures as primary source documents. Student then added their own dialogue and remixed their knowledge into a podcast aimed at supporting an originally developed thesis. The outcome was several 3-5 minute podcasts that became the springboard for the year’s first unit of study and pushed students to begin to consider both the process, as well as the outcomes of decolonization on a place and a people by focusing on the power of stories.
